Why Diamonds (and Other Gemstones) Can Hurt You If You're Not Careful

Gemstones are one of the most powerful remedies in Vedic Astrology—alongside mantras, homas, and other spiritual practices. But here’s something not everyone knows: not all gemstones are good for everyone. In fact, some stones can bring unexpected challenges, delays, or emotional turbulence if worn incorrectly.

That’s because gemstones amplify the energy of specific planets, and the impact of that energy depends entirely on your unique birth chart. Wearing the wrong stone is like turning up the volume on a frequency that may already be creating tension in your life. That’s why it’s so important to consult with an astrologer before wearing one.

Let’s talk about diamonds.

Diamonds represent the energy of Venus. While Venus is a benefic planet, its results vary dramatically based on the ascendant.

If you're a Virgo, Capricorn or Aquarius rising, Venus is your yoga karaka (great benefic) and diamonds often enhance beauty, charm, and prosperity. In these cases, diamonds can be a powerful ally.

But if you're an Aries or Scorpio rising, Venus rules the 2nd and 7th houses—maraka houses, meaning “death inflicting houses”. For these signs, diamonds may actually cause more harm than good, triggering health problems, relationship difficulties.

This is especially relevant when it comes to engagement rings, which are traditionally diamonds. While it’s a beautiful custom, I often suggest alternatives—like a yellow sapphire or ruby for Aries rising, for example.

What about blue sapphire?

Blue sapphire is the gemstone of Saturn. And Saturn’s energy—slow, heavy, and karmic—must be handled with care. If Saturn is well-placed in your chart, blue sapphire can bring incredible discipline, focus, and long-term success. But if it’s poorly placed, this stone can magnify fear, limitation, and delays. It's never a "casual" stone to wear.

Even Jupiter’s stone isn’t for everyone.

Yellow sapphire or citrine, associated with Jupiter, are often believed to bring good luck and expansion. But this isn’t true across the board. If you're a Taurus or Leo rising, Jupiter rules your 8th house—the house of sudden events, loss, transformation, and deep karmic shifts. Wearing Jupiter's stone in this case may activate more upheaval than growth.

The truth: choosing a gemstone is not about trends—it’s a sacred science.

Vedic gemstones are traditionally set in gold or silver, and the stone must touch the skin to transmit planetary energy. It’s important that the gem is natural and untreated, ideally sourced from a certified Jyotish gemologist. There’s also a ritual to follow and a muhurtha, or astrologically chosen time, when the stone is first worn to invite the planet’s blessing.

Can non jyotish gemstone affect you?

Yes, even if you bought your gemstone in a regular jewelry shop, it can still affect your life.

Want to know which gemstone is right for you?

I offer a mini gemstone reading where I look into your chart, ask you what’s currently unfolding in your life, and recommend the ideal gemstone for you. I also provide a muhurtha—a precise date and time—to wear it for the first time.

If you've been feeling called to wear a gemstone but aren’t sure which one—or if you’ve already been wearing one and something just feels off—this reading might bring the clarity you need.
